PREFACE
THIS part of the Catalog of Copyright Entries con- tains an alphabetical list of domestic and foreign maps, atlases, and other cartographic works which were registered in the Copyright Office from January 1, 1952, through June 30, 1952. Renewal registrations of maps, atlases, etc., made in this period are listed in a separate section of this catalog.
Arrangement.—This catalog is divided into four sections. The first section is made up of com- plete entries for works currently registered con- taining essential bibliographic and copyright data. These are arranged alphabetically under the name of the “authority” (that is, the name of the person, firm, institution, or other agency primarily respon- sible for the content of the map). Included also in this section are brief entries in the form of cross- references from distinctive titles and from copyright claimants, editors, compilers, joint authors, drafts- men, and publishers.
In the second section, an “Index of Areas and Subjects,” each registration is entered under head- ings descriptive of its subject, geographical area, or type, i. e., atlas, globe, etc. The name under which the full entry may be found in the first sec- tion follows that of the geographical area repre- sented in the work.
The area headings used consist of the names of the largest geographical or political units enclosed within the borders of the several maps. When the borders of a map do not coincide in any way with a single geographical or political unit, the name of the most significant unit contained therein is used in the heading. When the map contains three or
more States comprising part of one of the major geographical divisions of the United States, one of the following headings is used: Atlantic Sea- board; Gulf States; Middle States; Mountain States; New England States; North Central States, east; North Central States, west; Pacific States; South Atlantic States; South Central States, east; and South Central States, west. If the area shown on the map does not coincide with any of the foregoing eleven designations, one of the following sub- divisions under “United States” is used: northern, northeastern, eastern, southeastern, southern, cen: tral, northwestern, western, or southwestern. Names of rivers, lakes, and other geographical features are used when necessary.
The third section, “Renewals,” consists of a list of maps, atlases, etc., for which renewal copyrights were registered during the period covered by this catalog. The arrangement is the same as that of the first section. The list also includes brief entries in the form of cross-references from titles and from essential names associated with the work, including variant forms of these names.
The fourth section is a ‘Publishers’ Directory” which lists, alphabetically, the names of publishers of the maps, atlases, and other cartographic works described in the first section, together with the latest address for each, as given in the application or copy. An attempt is made to list the sources through which copies of the works may be obtained.
Bibliographic Data.—For works currently reg- istered, éach main entry includes, as applicable, 1)' the title; 2) an edition statement, together with
available information on previous publication; 3) the imprint, consisting of place of publication and name of publisher, when the publisher is not also the claimant (when publisher and claimant are the same, name of publisher and place of publication appear only in the statement of copyright data); 4) the size, series, and scale (scale is given as a representative fraction if it can be ascertained and followed by the linear scale as it appears on the map), or, in the case of atlases and other books, the pagination, and illus- tration statement if applicable; and 5) the descrip- tive notes.
When a sheet consists of two or more maps, all of which are included in the claim of copyright as given in the application, or when the title is selected from an outside cover and appears to include several specific map titles contained therein, the individual maps are listed in a note preceding the copyright statement. In all other cases in which there is indi- cation, from facts known to the Office, that addi- tional maps printed on the sheet are not included in a specific claim, the note appears in brackets following the copyright statement. The note includes the position of the additional maps in relation to the one for which main entry is made, e.g., “On sheet with,” ‘On verso”; it also contains the title of the additional map, or the number of maps, if more than one, and, when accompanied by a separate copyright notice, a statement of the data contained in the notice. Inset maps, however, are noted only if they are included in the claim of copyright or if several appear on the verso, in which case they are included in the statement of the number of maps.
The asterisk preceding the title indicates that Library of Congress printed cards are available. Orders for or inquiries regarding these cards should be addressed to the Card Division of the Library of Congress, Washington 25, D. C.
The names of any authors listed in the copyright application which do not appear elsewhere in the entry are given immediately preceding the copyright data after the statement, “Appl. author(s)... When an employer in the case of works made for hire is named in the application, his name is included in the entry, together with the names of the employees when given.
For renewals, the entry consists of 1) the title, including the area, and 2) the edition and other bibliographic data, if given in the application.
Copyright Data.—The portion of the entry
vi
giving the facts of copyright registration begins with the copyright symbol ©. For works currently regis- tered, the symbol is followed by 1) a brief statement of the new matter on which copyright is claimed when such a statement is given in the application; 2) the name of the copyright claimant and the chief place of publication (if not given in a separate im- print statement); 3) the date of publication as given in the copyright application, which represents also the year date given in the copyright notice unless the publication date is followed, in parentheses, by the statement, “‘in notice,” and a different year date; and 4) the registration number. Information con- tained in the application or in the copy of the work itself which relates to the registration of an earlier version of the work is given in brief form at the end of the entry.
For renewals, the entry gives 1) a brief statement of new matter on which copyright was claimed, when the information can be secured from the re- newal application or the records of the Copyright Office; 2) the date of original copyright; 3) the orig- inal registration number; 4) the renewal registration number; 5) the date of the receipt of renewal appli- cation; 6) the name of the renewal claimant; and 7) an abbreviation in parentheses representing the appli- cant’s statement of the basis of his renewal claim— e. g., John Doe (NK) indicates that renewal of copy- right is claimed by John Doe as next of kin of the deceased author.
In the case of each entry the name of the copy- right claimant is that given at the time of registra- tion. Information relating to subsequent changes of ownership recorded in the Copyright Office can be ascertained upon request and upon payment of the statutory search fee to the Register of Copyrights.
Deposit of Copies.—In the case of every copy- right entry listed in this part of the Catalog of Copy- right Entries, except for renewal copyrights, the deposit of copies (or copy) as required by sections 13 or 215 of Title 17 of the United States Code has been made.
Authority.—The Catalog of Copyright Entries is published by authority of sections 210 and 211 of Title 17 of the United States Code. Section 210 provides in part: “The current catalog of copyright entries and the index volumes herein provided for shall be admitted in any court as prima facie evidence of the facts stated therein as regards any copyright registration.”
Organization of the Catalog.—This issue of the Catalog of Copyright Entries is part of Volume 6 of the Third Series. The parts are numbered ac- cording to the alphabetical sequence of classes as listed in section 5 of Title 17 of the United States Code. Letters are added to the part numbers to indicate subdivisions.
The classes of material principally contained in each part are listed, together with their respective symbols, under the title of the part in the “Table of Organization,” which faces the title page in this catalog. In each case, the first letter of the symbol is that of the class under which registration is made; the second, if any, is a designation added by the Copyright Office for purposes of statistical analysis of registrations. Foreign works for which two copies have been deposited, under section 215 of Title 17 of the United States Code are distinguished by a zero immediately following the symbol. The symbol R does not represent a class designated in the copyright law, but has been adopted by the Copyright Office to distinguish renewal copyright registration. Some parts also contain registrations made under symbols other than those listed for the particular part if the subject matter or type of ma-
Vil
terial of these registrations is similar to that gen- erally included.
Orders.—Orders for all parts of the Catalog of Copyright Entries should be sent directly to the Register of Copyrights, Library of Congress, Wash- ington 25, D. C. Orders may be placed as follows: (1) as a subscription for a single year or to continue until further notice, or (2) as an order for individual issues. All orders should state clearly the title of the Catalog part and the inclusive dates of the issues wanted. Checks or money orders should be made payable to the Register of Copyrights.
The price of each individual number of the Catalog is given in the “Table of Organization.” The annual subscription rate for each part is twice the price of a single number, since all parts are issued semiannually. The complete Catalog of Copyright Entries may be secured on a subscription basis for $20 a year.
Inquiries.—The Copyright Office welcomes in- quiries, suggestions, and comments on the content and organization of the Catalog. Please address communications of this nature to the Chief of the Cataloging Division, Copyright Office, Library of Congress, Washington 25, D. C.
